Mid pandemic, I was in need of structure and balance in my life. I wanted a daily exercise that I could face that would not only be regular, but would challenge me– something different than choosing which tv show to watch and which bag of chips I’d pick after lunch. I was looking through some images I had taken around the city and I came across one that was beautiful in a very unusual way so I decided to trace shapes from it. I chose various ones and began to lay them on top of one another to see how they would overlap within the confines of a 9 by 12 inch piece of paper (knowing very well I wanted to do monochromatic gouache paintings.) So I ended up choosing 4 shapes that when overlaid, made 27 total shapes and produced a very intriguing abstract composition. This became the blueprint for each days painting.
Theoretically, if I drew this pattern onto a 9 by12 inch piece of paper every day and approached it with only black gouache and a paint brush, there could be millions of outcomes simply by choosing which of the shapes to paint black.
In short, the process of making dailies inevitably became second nature. The art became centered around the choices and the thought processes behind the painting and less and less about the physicality of making them.
